An April Fool's Day snowstorm didn't slow things down any in the birthing barn. This morning Chanel birthed this pair of Cormo ewe lambs. With three new arrivals it's time to get down to the business of naming our little apples.
This year I enlisted help from my Sheep Shares CSA members to name our first lamb. Pippin was chosen as the most popular name for a ewe lamb. And so we've named our first lamb, born yesterday to Chloe.
The second most popular name for a girl was: Duchess .
The most popular choices for a ram lamb was McIntosh. Since we have no ram lambs yet and I love both these names, we'll use them for today's ewe lambs.
Thanks to everyone who collaborated to name our first lambs of the year.
I'm off to bed now. During lambing season I try to stockpile sleep during the day, resting when I can, in case I have to be in the barn at night. I was knocked down today with a stomach bug. It's a really good thing I have excellent barn back-up (Mike and Holly!).
Stay tuned, I promise to keep you posted on new arrivals in the birthing barn.
Speaking of new arrivals, today was launch day for the spring issue for Twist Collective. This issue is jam packed with great designs. It also contains the first of a series of articles I'm writing for Twist. The Fifty-Mile Fiber Diet is about sourcing fibers close to home. Click here to check it out.

Congratulations! They look so cute! Love the names!

Beautiful!
Love the article..."some farmers go as far as" sheep jackets? We wouldn't know anyone like that. ;D
Really, I love the bit about anchoring. I actually just hung up some pictures of some finished objects in a show, and the blurb I wrote up to go with them talks about how it's more than just yarn, textiles form a continuous thread in my life. Anchoring is the perfect way to describe it.

How precious, I had a really hard day at work and a heat wave of over 90 degrees wasn't much fun either (air conditioner is on the fritz too). This post made everything just a little better. I love the photo of Crackerjack inspecting his new little lamb.

Great article, Barb! There's a pretty shawl pattern in TC, too, called Budding Apples; it would be lovely in your lace or sock yarn, and seems particularly apt with your new apple arrivals! Congratulations on the new ewes.

The lambs are beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I loved your article. It's making me think about the yarn I'd like to purchase in a whole new way.

Beautiful lambs.
Loved your article in Twist and can't wait for the other articles to come along. You've given me that extra nudge to search out local farms even though I'm smack dab in the middle of an urban area.

The lambs are beautiful. Congrats on 3 ewes! I may have to sneak up the hill sometime, we didn't breed our ewes this year, so I have no little lambies to snuggle!

Already read the article - so interesting! Look forward to the next in series.
these lambs are so adorable - how sweet; and Mom is so sweet cleaning them up - she looks very attentive. Thank you for taking the time to take pictures - looks like very recently after birth too. I know it's going to get very busy for you!
