I have some exciting non-sheep related news. We are getting puppies in September!
A pair of Golden Retrievers (male and female) will soon call our farm home. I have been in contact with breeder Louise Guy (of Stoneledge Golden Retrievers) since June after losing our dear Daphne. At the time I wasn't sure we wanted another dog so soon but was intrigued to learn that Louise's dogs share common U.K. bloodlines with all three of our girls who passed away over the last year. After meeting Louise and falling in love with her dogs Holly, Crystal (the moms) and Gucci (the dad), we put our names on the list for one puppy and then quickly decided that we would rather raise two while we're at it.
The loss of our girls left a huge void in our home. Sure, we have pastures full of sheep and llamas and goats; we see plenty of four-legged critters in every direction when we look outside.
What we've really been missing this summer is sharing the sofa with a snoozing pooch, picking fur balls out of the beater bar on the vacuum cleaner, tripping over tennis balls and chew toys in the hallway, scooping clots of fluff from the swimming pool skimmer. . . and mostly the gigantic "<<<<<<HELLO! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN??>>>>>>" whenever we step into the house.
We love our sheep, but they don't sleep at my feet when I settle down with with my knitting or a good book at the end of day. And the llamas are useless when it comes to retrieving tennis balls.
We raise sheep but we are dog people.
And so we are getting puppies. They were born in July. Today we met them for the first time.
OMG.
Can you tell we are just a little excited?!

Barb that is great news! I am soo happy for you!! They are adorable!!

I can see why it was love at first sight! To me, retriever puppies are the cutest, sweetest, most precious little things. What a wonderful life they will have. Something wonderful to look forward to after your upcoming week. Hugs and pats!

Barb,
Am thrilled for you and Mike. Even a cat person like me knows how tough it is to lose a beloved pet--and what joy new personalities clothed in fur can bring. Congrats.

I'm so happy for you, Barb. You and Mike are dog people as both Hubby and I are.
What you wrote about what you're missing sure hit home as we just lost our 12+ year old German Shepherd, Anna, on 11 Aug. As you know, the initial silence in the house is deafening and the places she would lie are so very empty.
We, too, will look soon for another furry companion who will adopt us. And I'll love watching you with your new pups when you bring them home.

OMG they are sooo cute! Congrats on your new cuddly additions. This is the perfect time of year to raise a pup. So much easier to house train and expose them to new experiences outside. So happy for you and Mike!

I'm so happy for you and I am so jealous. My heart wants a puppy, but my brain says no way. At this point in my life my brain is winning. I don't know for how much longer looking at those adorable puppies. I can just about smell that incredible puppy smell. Those little faces are tugging at my heartstrings. I look forward to lots of puppy pictures and wonderful stories of puppy adventures. Can't wait to hear how they react to sheep and llamas.

OMG, I had no idea puppies were that close at hand when i made an e-mail comment. Yeah. No matter how many other critters share your lives, there is just no substitute for a dog or two. Great news. So happy for you.
